Description[edit]

The 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games heralded a number of firsts in Olympic history – the first time Australia had hosted the Games and the first time the world’s most celebrated sporting event had been held in the Southern Hemisphere. One of the most glorious sights of the Games was the lighting of the Olympic Flame on 22 November 1956. Australia Post issued a set of four stamps to commemorate the XVI Olympiad – one of the stamps depicting an Olympic Torch. As part of the Australia 99 Olympics Day celebrations on 22 March, Australia Post will release a $1.20 stamp with the original 7 1/2d Olympic Torch stamp in a contemporary ‘stamp on stamp’ design.
