The first Netherlands stamps appeared in January 1852. The country name did not appear on the postage stamps of the Netherlands until 1864.

Before then, all the postage stamps were inscribed with only "POST ZEGEL" (English: "POSTAGE STAMP") and the denomination.

Cover usage[edit]

Two 5 cent Blues used to cover the 10 cents rate on folded letter from Venlo to Kaldenkirchen, Germany sent on 9 May 1853.
1863 Two 5 cent Blues used to cover the 10 cents rate on folded letter from Roermond via Weert (transit on reverse) and Eindhoven to Leende. Cancelled with the Franco paid box cancel
